Nikola has announced it has secured over 200 sales orders for its Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. The 202 sales orders were made through the HYLA brand and involve 18 end customers, with most agreements directly between fleets and dealers.

The production of these heavy-duty trucks has commenced at Nikola’s manufacturing facility in Coolidge, Arizona. Deliveries are expected to begin later this year, following the successful completion of a demonstration programme.

The Hydrogen fuel cell electric truck offers a range of up to 500 miles and a fast refueling time of approximately 20 minutes. It is expected to have one of the longest ranges among commercially available zero-emission Class 8 trucks, suitable for various applications such as drayage, intermodal, and specialised hauling. The California Air Resources Board’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) programme have played a vital role in accelerating the sales orders by providing incentives to Nikola’s customers. Additionally, Nikola’s customers will also be eligible for a federal clean commercial vehicle tax credit, further promoting the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.

Nikola is also anticipating significant growth in Canada, having received eligibility for the Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) Program. This programme offers Canadian organisations incentives of up to $200,000 (CAD) for the purchase or lease of the hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Truck and up to $150,000 (CAD) for the battery-electric truck.
