As environmental sustainability continues to be a top priority for airports worldwide, the need for decarbonisation and emission reduction of vehicles and ground support equipment has become increasingly pressing. In response to this demand, Germany-based chassis manufacturer Titan became Scania’s first customer for this hybrid configuration for airport fire trucks. The hybrid system is being used in the new T-39 6x6-H ARFF chassis series.

The hybrid solution developed by Scania enables the vehicle to operate with minimal emissions while performing various daily operations. The combustion engine is approved for HVO, reducing emissions to a minimum. Additionally, the hybrid configuration improves several product characteristics of the vehicle, including acceleration time, which is critical in emergencies.

The hybrid truck is equipped with a 770 hp Scania 16-litre V8 combustion engine in combination with a 380 hp electric motor, providing a total of up to 1,150 hp. This results in a faster and safer response time, meeting the strict requirements of airport fire departments worldwide.

Tommy Johnson, Global Key Account Manager at Scania, described the hybrid solution as a significant achievement for the company, leveraging their experience as a truck and bus manufacturer with new insights and innovations developed on their rapid electrification journey. He added that the technology developed for their trucks and buses has been adapted to develop a complete offering that suits airport fire trucks perfectly.

Scania will be responsible for providing all the components for the system, including batteries, E-machines, and the combustion engine. Customers will benefit from Scania’s services, ensuring maximum uptime for their vehicles.
