FPT Industrial, Iveco’s powertrain brand, officially opened its new ePowertrain factory in Turin (Italy) in October. The manufacturing site is entirely devoted to the manufacture of the electric powertrain line, underlining the expected growing demand for the carbon zero technology.

The factory, which covers an area of 15,000sq-m, uses solar and wind for some of its electricity using solar panels, though the company admits it has to purchase carbon credits to entirely offset its CO2 emissions. The 6,000sq-m factory building features 100 drought-resistant plants which absorbs an additional 7 tonnes of CO2 every year.

At full capacity, the plant will  produce over 20,000 electric axles and over 20,000 battery packs a year, says Iveco. The electric axles will equip heavy-duty vehicles such as the Nikola Tre truck, while the electric transfer boxes and compact battery packs will be installed on light commercial vehicles and minibuses, such as the new eDAILY.
